WFH Series: Rachel Weeks

In today's WFH series, we're featuring Rachel Weeks, founder of Scout House, a copywriting and creative studio located in San Diego, CA (be sure and follow her account for beautiful California-lifestyle imagery too). Here we go!

1) What is your favorite and least favorite thing about working from home?

Things like sitting still for hours at a time, staying on task, adhering to structure – the hallmarks of a "normal" work routine – are all a struggle for my brain, because I've grappled with pretty significant ADHD my whole life. The beauty of working from home (and being a freelancer more broadly) is having the freedom to construct loose routines, a stimulating environment, and nonlinear ways of doing things that align with how I work best and what my brain craves. My least favorite thing about working from home is actually the lack of a commute, counterintuitively! I used to work in a startup incubator and had a 20-minute walk to and from work each day. In hindsight, that commute was an important cognitive transition, as I was both gearing up for work and winding down from it. It's difficult to turn "on" and "off" instantly when you're working from home!

2) Daily essentials?
Candles from Brooklyn Candle Studio ("Leather Jacket" and "Montana Forest" are my two favorites), Nuun electrolyte tablets, sound-proof headphones, and Notion.

3) Your favorite productivity hack or tool?

Context switching from one type of task to another (or even one client to another) can be tough, so I like to set up different work stations around my house for different projects. For instance, I might do all of my emails at the dining table, my design work on the couch, and my copywriting in my office. Being able to relocate throughout the day to each station helps my brain transition (it's my version of a commute, I guess!) and it's like a mini reset button.
